WINDING ROADS
A Bicyclist's Journey Through Life and America

PROMOTIONAL PRAISE

What person hasn’t studied a map, before, during, or after a trip?  Where am I?  Where am I going?  Writing about his experiences from forty years ago, John Frederick’s cycling sojourn is chock full of references to places across the U.S., from the Appalachians to the Rockies.  His vivid descriptions bring to life not only his cross-country journey, but slices of life from post-World War II America, beginning on a numbered street in an Altoona neighborhood.  It’s an entertaining read.  I encourage you to make the journey. ”
— Dr. Robert Brooks, Professor of Geography/Ecology, Penn State University

BOOK SYNOPSIS

The view from the sometimes uncomfortable seat of a bicycle is unique. It offers intimate insight into the colorful people cyclists encounter, the geography surrounding us, the roads we travel on, and the mechanism on which we move. All are seen at the deliberate speed that can be experienced only on a bicycle. This story is not just about the rides but also the transformation of a shy, non-athletic kid. In the summer of 1978, John Frederick set out from his insulated life in Central Pennsylvania upon a journey that would dramatically change his life.  A cross-country bicycling trek after college graduation became his rite of passage, but the things that led up to that trip make for a series of fascinating stories unto themselves. In this compelling travel memoir, Frederick imparts his lifelong adventure with humor and sharp insight. Saddle up for a lively odyssey stretching across the vivid landscapes of America.

READER REVIEWS

Winding Roads is a lively journey across America through the eyes of an adventurous Baby Boomer in 1978. From the saddle of his bicycle, Frederick endured a comical, challenging, and revelatory odyssey through the nation. He encountered a broad assortment of colorful individuals, communities, national parks, and landscapes. It is almost an injustice to refer to this as merely a 'bicycling book.' Highly recommend! ”
John spins a good read even if you’re not into cycling. His geography lessons describe the states he visited and his style of writing makes you feel like you’re along for the ride. ”
Author John Frederick is a master storyteller. Winding Roads is his story of how his cycling passion developed and culminated in his epic ride across America…John's prose rolls right off the page in a highly agreeable, addictive manner, leaving readers eager for more. The details of what it's like to ride into small, sparsely populated towns in places barely marked on maps are intriguing, to say the least. John's considerable narrative skills make even these highly local sagas interesting. Guaranteed. ”
John's book moves briskly, tells interesting stories, and ends far too quickly. If you are interested in bicycling, or know someone who is, get this book, for yourself or them. ”
